In 1914, famed photographer Edward S. Curtis produced a silent motion picture entitled “In the Land of the Head Hunters.” An epic story of forbidden love and war set before European contact, it featured
non-professional actors from Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) communities in British Columbia-a people already famous for their spectacular visual culture and performances.
A newly restored copy of the film will be shown, accompanied by a live orchestra, and afterward there will be dancing from the Gwa'wina dancers, featuring descendants of the original cast; presenting and discussing songs and dances drawn from those pictured in the film. Great for classes studying Native American history! (Public presentation June 10, 7:00 pm)
