Blues In The Schools (BITS) is a program developed by the Blues Foundation in Memphis to promote and preserve the heritage of Blues music. Joe Bonamassa's hour-long BITS presentation includes a mini-performance and discussion that take SAS students on a musical journey, tracking the evolution of Blues music from the Deep South in the late 1800's up through today's diverse Blues styles.

Local comedy actors from Jet City Improv and UW perform energetic improvisations based on themes from 100 years of performing arts evolution at The Moore Theatre. The Henry Art Gallery hosts the Teenie Harris exhibit, the inspiration for Ron Brown's choreographic work, One Shot(performed at The Moore Theatre on November 2 & 3). The exhibit focuses on black life in Pittsburgh and is part of both the Carnegie Museum of Art & August Wilson Center, Pittsburgh.

Documenting Neighborhoods and Families Workshop (Invited Youth in Focus students only)

Henry Art Gallery

Ronald K. Brown will conduct a 2 hour dance and photography workshop for teen photographers from the Youth in Focus program. Prior to the workshop, Youth in Focus teen photographers document their neighborhoods and families. Participants will utilize the themes and emotion captured in student photographs to generate movement material to create a dance story that has meaning and resonance.

Memoria, choreographed by Alvin Ailey is a tribute to Joyce Trisler, former dancer and friend of Alvin Ailey. As part of AAADT’s 50th Anniversary celebration, 23 young northwest dancers rehearse with Ronni Favors, rehearsal director for AAADT, and perform Ailey’s work Memoria at The Paramount Theatre.

Founded by Alvin Ailey in 1958, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT) has earned a reputation as one of the most acclaimed international ambassadors of American culture, promoting the uniqueness of African-American cultural experience and preservation and enrichment of the American modern dance. The lecture/demonstration is conducted by Ailey dancers and features artists' warm up, excerpts from company repertoire and a Q & A.

A teacher from AAADT will conduct school residencies for middle school students at African American Academy and Zion Preparatory Academy. The residency utilizes Alvin Ailey's work, Revelations, as the inspirational framework for a comprehensive study of language arts, social studies and dance. Students will receive tickets to AAADT's performance at The Paramount Theatre.

Mark Morris and Gigi Yellen of KING-FM share a conversation at the first Seattle home of Mark Morris Dance Group, On the Boards. Hear them discuss his choreography, his work in Seattle and the upcoming 20th anniversary of his ground-breaking masterpiece, L'Allegro.

MMDG, STG and OtB present an exclusive photography exhibit, "Hidden Soul of Harmony: Mark Morris' L'Allegro" with images of L'Allegro by Stephanie Berger and Susana Millman from the past 20 years. Exhibit is located in the OtB lobby and is only viewable for free as part of this event.

Introductory Workshop

Dancers from MMDG lead an introductory dance workshop for individuals with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers with live accompaniment. Dancers and persons with Parkinson’s Disease both need to stretch and strengthen their bodies, use eyes, ears and touch to control movement, think about how they move and constantly work on balance. Participants will discover how exhilarating it is to dance - mentally, spiritually and physically.

This one hour lecture/demonstration with organist Dennis James will includes demonstration of the organ; discussion on the silent film era and composing/scoring for silent film; and screening of a short segment of a silent film.

    This 50-minute performance, presented by Sukutai, features dance, song and music from Zimbabwe, Guinea and Ghana. Students learn about African culture through this high-energy, interactive presentation, featuring traditional instruments, dance and audience participation. Three performers-Lora Chiorah Dye (Zimbabwe), Karim Koumbassa (Guinea) and Kofi Anang (Ghana)-combine dance, music, percussion, storytelling and singing to celebrate the heritage of Africa.     Single workshops and multiple session residencies available in hip hop dance with Seattle-based choreographer Daniel Cruz and members of Cruz Control. Cruz's high energy hip hop style blends street movement with jazz, African and modern.   • Theatre Access Program (TAP): STG annually provides thousands of tickets to performances at The Paramount and Moore Theatres to school groups, youth organizations, community centers, social service organizations, young artists and seniors who would otherwise be unable to afford the opportunity.   • Historic Tours of The Paramount and Moore Theatres: Seattle Theatre Group gives the public a chance to learn more about the historic Paramount and Moore Theatres while giving them a glimpse behind the scenes. Free; once a month-The first Saturday of every month at 10am at The Paramount & the second Saturday of every month at 10am at The Moore Theatre. For more information, click here.

  • Student Tours: STG offers free tours of the historic Paramount and Moore Theatres for educators and students ages seven and up. Tour guides introduce students to theatre architecture, design, history and technical aspects. Schedule tours upon request for student groups.
