(Black Spring (2002); Directed by Benoit Dervaux; Choreographed by Heddy Maalem)
Winner of the Best Choreography for the Camera Award at the New York Dance on Camera Festival 2003, the film questions our way of looking at African bodies in movement. The choreography interspersed with scenes of life in Lagos, Nigeria, highlights both the political and emotional sensitivities of modern African dance. The screening and panel discussion will examine our assumptions of the African body in dance. The screening will be followed by an enlightening discussion with Kabby Mitchell, III (Dance professor and choreographer, Evergreen State College) and Patricia Ploesch (Professor, Integrated Studies, Cornish College of the Arts), moderated by Vivian Phillips (Executive Director, Langston Hughes/Africa Contemporary Arts Consortium member).

The Young Choreographer’s Lab is for teens interested in pursuing their artistic vision as choreographers as well as dancers. Up to 15 teens will be selected for the program which meets for six weeks (three hours/week). Seattle choreographer, Amy O’Neal, will lead the ongoing sessions, including workshops with several top Seattle and international choreographers including Donald Byrd, Cie Heddy Maalem, Anne Gilbert, Kirsten Cooper and Mark Haim. Bring your students to the Historic Paramount Theatre in downtown Seattle to step back in time to the 1920s. Hear the Paramount’s own Mighty Wurlitzer organ, see a segment of a silent film and learn about the silent film era- a perfect opportunity for students to learn about theatre, music and history. This Lecture/Demonstration with organist Dennis James will include: demonstration of the organ and sound effects; discussion on the silent film era and composing/scoring for silent film; and a screening of a short silent film.   • Black Achievers Program Partnership
    STG partners with the Meredith Matthews YMCA Black Achievers Program to expose students to a wide range of performing arts programs. Activities for participants include on-site participatory workshops in music, dance and theatre, a Careers in the Arts presentation and attendance at six STG presentations at the Paramount and Moore Theatres throughout the 2008-2009 season.

  • In-school Workshops and Residencies
    Interested in a hands-on arts experience for students at your school? STG offers residencies available in cultural and contemporary dance and music with Northwest-based artists. Arts instruction is available to suit your school’s interests and needs—varying from a one-time workshop to multiple week residency. Activities are in line with Washington State Arts EALRS and are tailored to students' skill level and ages.

  • Historic Tours of The Paramount and Moore Theatres
    Seattle Theatre Group gives the public a chance to learn more about the historic Paramount and Moore Theatres while giving them a glimpse behind the scenes.   • Student Tours: STG offers free tours of the historic Paramount and Moore Theatres for educators and students ages seven and up. Tour guides introduce students to theatre architecture, design, history and technical aspects. Schedule tours upon request for student groups.

  • Theatre Access Program (TAP)
    STG annually provides thousands of tickets to performances at The Paramount and Moore Theatres to school groups, youth organizations, community centers, social service organizations, young artists and seniors who would otherwise be unable to afford the opportunity. To apply, click here.
